Apple is a potential buyer of Nokia’s HERE mapping business

Image
Apple is a potential buyer of Nokia’s HERE mapping business According to a report in Bloomberg, Apple is among the potential buyers for Nokia’s HERE mapping business. The Cupertino giant is among the high-profile suitors approached by the Finnish company nokia about interest. Other potential buyers of HERE include Alibaba, Amazon, Facebook, Baidu, and a group of German carmakers among others. A number of private equity firms are also said to be interested. Nokia has been working with a financial advisor on the sale of its mapping unit. The Finnish company  nokia is seeking more than €3 billion (about $3.2 billion), with the first bids due to arrive at the end of next week. Nokia has been busy making headlines lately. The company acquired Alcatel-Lucent for €15.6 billion. It is also rumored to return to making phones next year. An acquisition of HERE would make a great deal of sense for Apple, as it will give its own Maps service a welcome boost. Since its

JDI outs WQHD LCD display with in-cell touch integration

Image
JDI outs WQHD LCD display with in-cell touch integration Japan Display Inc. took the wraps off a WQHD (2560 x 1440 pixels) LCD display with in-cell touch integration. The high-end component is the first of its kind to enter mass production. The newcomer will have a diagonal larger than five inches. It incorporates in-cell touch used in JDI’s “Pixel Eyes” technology. In-cell touch integration has been difficult to incorporate in high-resolution displays, so the new LCD panel is quite an engineering feat. Viewing angles of the display will be larger than 160 degrees. Its surface luminance and NTSC ratio are 500cd/m2 and 85% respectively. The unit’s contrast ratio is 1500:1. The component is certain to debut in a high-end smartphone at some point in the near future. JDI also made noise recently in a rumor about potential partnership with Apple.

A Nokia 1100 with quad-core CPU and Lollipop spotted online

Image
A Nokia 1100 with quad-core CPU and Lollipop spotted online Recently there has been some movement on the Nokia front with the Android-powered N1 tablet selling out by the truck-load in mere seconds. This is perhaps why this alleged leaked benchmark sheet is so exciting. The prospect of Nokia coming back to the mobile front with an Android device, bearing the legendary 1100 model name is an astounding prospect, but also, sadly, highly unlikely. Most of you surely remember the Nokia 1100. Its immense popularity on various markets have turned it into a legend. The 2003 GSM device, complete with flashlight, of course, was even shortly resurrected back in 2009 after an alleged loop-hole in bank security systems ramped old unit prices to as much as $32,000. Since then not much has been spoken of the ancient device, even more so after Microsoft officially acquired Nokia's Devices and Services division. Since then the Finnish company has not been producing any mobile phone d

WhatsApp starts rolling out calling feature

Image
WhatsApp starts rolling out calling feature WhatsApp’s much requested calling feature has been rumored for a while now but the company has finally flipped the switch on it. One  reddit  user was able to get the feature activated on his number and it is now rolling out to others as well. For now it seems WhatsApp is going slow with the rollout, with the only people who have the feature being those who were called by someone who already has the feature. So although it helps to have the latest version of the app installed on your device (for Android users, it’s usually the APK available through the website), you’ll still have to wait for it to roll out to you or someone with the feature to call you. As for the interface, the calling feature adds individual calls, chats, and contacts tabs at the top. First shows your recent calls through the apps, second shows your chats and the third is for your contacts. The call interface is fairly simple, showing the name and WhatsApp image

Samsung Galaxy S6 to pack a 20MP camera with OIS

Image
Samsung Galaxy S6 to pack a 20MP camera with OIS  Samsung's upcoming   Galaxy S6   is a regular visitor to the rumor mill. This time, industry insiders from the Samsung Electro-Mechanics (SEM) subsidiary hint that the top-end smartphone will pack a 20MP main camera with optical image stabilization. Last year's poor financial results of SEM were caused by the predominant market distribution of low-end camera modules with small profit margins. What's interesting is that profits for this year are expected to be on the rise, thanks to the production of premium 16MP and 20MP OIS camera modules. We haven't seen Samsung make a 20MP stabilized camera yet, but who would be more likely to rock it, if not the upcoming flagship. While Samsung has previously been caught employing Sony sensors, this report in Korean media suggests that won't be the case for the Galaxy S6. And with the likely utilization of an in-house chipsetfor the future flagship, a home-brewed camera w

Android Lollipop update for LG G2 gets showcased on video

Image
Android Lollipop update for LG G2 gets showcased on video LG was one of the first manufacturers to start rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop last year, but so far the new software has only made it to the G3 - and only in certain places. That said, it definitely looks like LG isn't going to leave its previous flagship, the G2, behind when it comes to running the latest iteration of Google's mobile OS. This has been made obvious by the fact that LG is hard at work on the Lollipop bits for the G2. This wasconfirmed by a leaked screenshot last month. And now, as further proof, we have a couple of quick videos showing us just what the new software will look like on the top LG phone from 2013. First up, we have a demo from an actual G2 unit having the new Android version installed. As with the following video, this one is about the Korean version of the G2, but since LG is going to update that to Lollipop it makes little sense for the company not to do the same for the in

Huawei G628 surfaces in China with 64-bit MediaTek SoC

Image
Huawei G628 surfaces in China with 64-bit MediaTek SoC Huawei is working on a new midrange smartphone, which it will launch at least on the Chinese market. The G628 may make it to other countries as the Ascend G628, but nothing's certain just yet. The phone comes with less than stellar specs, but it does stand out in one regard. This will be the first Huawei device to use a 64-bit chipset from MediaTek, namely the MT6752. Unfortunately though, it's set to run Android 4.4 KitKat, which simply can't take advantage of the 64-bit support - the first version to do that is 5.0 Lollipop. So unless Huawei will update the G628 to Lollipop at some point in the future (which seems unlikely), "64-bit" will be nothing but a meaningless buzzword in this case. The G628 has a 5-inch 720p touchscreen, an 8 MP rear camera with LED flash, a 2 MP front snapper, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of integrated storage. The MT6752 SoC comes with a 1.5 GHz octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU. Dual-S

24K gold plated iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus out in China

Image
24K gold plated iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus out in China Gold is everywhere these days (in the mobile world that is). We're starting to see more and more 'gold' versions of smartphones, the latest being Microsoft's Lumia 930 and Lumia 830, which were just announced a couple of days ago. But those are still nothing more than new colors - they aren't using actual gold. The Chinese company NavJack, however, is now offering limited edition gold plated versions of theiPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. And this is real, 24K gold we're talking about here.       24K gold plated iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus As you can see from the images above (click the thumbnails for full-size pictures), the gold plated iPhones even feature a carbon fiber-like finish on the back, for an added sense of exclusivity. NavJack is also adding a layer of Gorilla Glass 3 to the front panel of the iPhones, for whatever reason. We assume that's meant to make the screen side more drop and

Xiaomi to unveil the Redmi Note 2 on January 15, not Mi 5

Image
Xiaomi to unveil the Redmi Note 2 on January 15, not Mi 5 Xiaomi is holding an event on January 15, and so far the rumors have been pretty adamant that we should see the Mi 5 or Mi 4s unveiled on that occasion. Now though, things are becoming less clear. A pretty well known reseller of Chinese smartphones has listed the yet unannounced Xiaomi Redmi Note 2. This is supposed to be the successor to the company's first phablet, the Redmi Note, obviously. The listing gives us plenty of details about its hardware, thankfully. Before we proceed, do keep in mind that this isn't official just yet - so while the following specs certainly could be from the Redmi Note 2, there's no guarantee. Apparently Xiaomi's next phablet will come with a design that's extremely close to that of its current flagship, the  Mi 4  (as you can see in the image below where the two are portrayed next to each other). So gone is the more blocky feel of the original Redmi Note. This give

Xiaomi's $65, LTE-enabled Android passes through TENAA

Image
Xiaomi's $65, LTE-enabled Android passes through TENAA What's the cheapest LTE-enabled phone you can buy? The answer may be this (yet to be named) Xiaomi, which recently passed the certification process at TENAA. By the looks of it it's a variation of the new Xiaomi Redmi 2, but while that one costs CNY 700, this new model will be just CNY 400 ($65/€55). Late last year Xiaomi struck a patent deal with local chipset maker Leadcore Technologies. It was a fairly small deal (under $17 million), but it gave the fast-growing smartphone manufacturer access to LTE.       Xiaomi's ultra-cheap LTE phone (photos by TENAA) Still, those are huge markets and the new Xiaomi model sounds like a steal – it packs a 4.7" 720p screen, measures runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat, has an 8MP/1080p main camera and comes with 8GB of expandable storage. It's reasonably compact too, measuring 9.2mm thick and weighing 134g. Again, this it at $65. The phone is powered by a Leadcore ch

Lenovo A6000 with Snapdragon 410 unveiled

Image
Lenovo A6000 with Snapdragon 410 unveiled Lenovo is hitting CES 2015 hard with a lot of interesting new device announcements and outshining a lot of the competition. Besides the Vibe X2 Pro and the Lenovo P90, along with an array of new laptops, including an improved ThinkPad X1 Carbon, and a smart band the Chinese giant has unveiled yet another smartphone - the Lenovo A6000. The Lenovo A6000 is powered by a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset with 1.2GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 processor and bears a 5-inch 720p IPS display. The device comes with 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal memory and two cameras - 8MP back shooter and 2MP front. Nothing too spectacular, but initial pricing puts the device at $169 or under INR 10,000. For that price tag the specs sheet is pretty impressive, taking into account that the A6000 will also come with 4G LTE connectivity as two SIM cards. The budget-oriented Snapdragon 410-based, 4G LTE handset that is specifically geared towards the India market,
